In conjunction with the United Mine Workers of America and California University of Pennsylvania, on May 13th, 1996, AFGE Local 1916 established the Joseph A. Main AFGE /UMWA Scholarship at California University of PA.  The purpose of this AFGE Local 1916 union scholarship is to financially assist an undergraduate student attending California University of PA who is a current member or employee or the child of a current member or employee of either AFGE or the UMWA.

AFGE Local 1916 established this scholarship with a contribution that was matched by the UMWA and California University of PA.  Once the fund reached a principle balance of $10,000, the scholarship would be financially sufficient to permit students to begin receiving financial assistance from the earning on the endowment.  In 1998, the fund reached the $10,000 level, and the first scholarship was awarded in the amount of $275.

Based upon membership approval, AFGE Local 1916 continues to budget for a contribution to the fund and continues to solicit the UMWA for matching contributions to the fund.  At the present time, the fund supports an annual scholarship of $750.

Applications for the scholarship must be submitted by March 31st each year with the scholarship covering the ensuing fall and spring semesters. Applications can be obtained by contacting President Demicheli.  Additional information regarding the scholarship and other scholarship at California University of PA can be obtained on the university's Financial Aid website.  (Note: The application, which is presently being restructured will soon be available on the website.)
